After our beach day we raced to the other end of the island to a town called Oia. we had been told about and read quite a bit about the beautiful sunset to be seen from the town as it was intricately sewn into the cliff-tops and had a perfect view of the sea and the horizon. We struggled to find parking as EVERYONE - tourists, locals, and even some dogs, cats, and donkeys - quickly tried to find a spot to watch the sun set. We climbed over a few walls, jumped down to a deck-like area and joined a group of mostly-British tourists to get a great view. It was worth all of the hustle, as this was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. All sunsets are pretty. Whether it be on the west coast [Devi and Vicki ;) ], or here at home in DC, we all have some great experiences enjoying them. But this really was something different and special for us all. I hope you can all make it there some day to soak in the experience for yourselves!
After sunset, we walked around the town. Sounds exciting, I know, but let me tell you about the design - there were houses built high and low into the rocks; the streets were almost entirely made of marble slabs and woven throughout the smooth layout of each structure (stores, churches, and homes); small streets packed with so many tourists wandering as we were. It was quite fun to see how everyone appreciated the area differently. For my very artistic and down-to-earth family, we of course appreciated the buildings, photo opportunities, color scheme of mostly white with multi-colored rooftops, doors, and windows, and the artwork and design shops spread throughout the city. We found a place to eat at about midnight (Greeks eat dinner anywhere from 5pm until 3am...I know, don't ask me, we are a weird people!).
On the way home, we got lost and took the long way through one of the bigger cities which, out of nowhere, transformed from quiet dark island road into club-heaven. There were people in all different colored skin suits, business like suits, casual wear, and so many other strange outfits. What did they all have in common? They were energetic and looking to party in what seemed to be a techno mecca for the dancer in all of us. Finally we made it back home and within the hour, everyone found themselves in their respective bedrooms breathing in the silence of our last night in Santorini.
